Kingston Golden At AUS Championships

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB REDS added to their medal haul on Sunday, the final day of competition at the 2023 Subway Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, in St. John's.

The Dalhousie Tigers won both the women's and men's conference titles.

The evening began with a women's 200m butterfly final that saw Allison McCloy of Dal win her fourth gold medal of the weekend. Memorial's Heidi Perry was second and UNB's Hannah Casey earned the bronze medal, her second medal of the championships.

"It feels good to be coming home with two medals," said Casey. "As a graduating student-athlete, being able to perform and have the support of the team one last time means the world to me."

Dal's Regan Crowell won gold in the women's 100m freestyle final, beating UNB's Jennifer Moore to the wall. Dal's Elaine Gentlemen took the bronze medal, finishing just 6/100ths of a second ahead of the REDS Jessie Collett.

In the men's 200m breaststroke final, Blake Kingston of UNB and Gordon Shortt of Acadia battled until the very last meter. In the end, it was Kingston coming out on top, winning gold with a time of 2:18.30.

"It means so much to me to win," said Kingston. "It goes to show how hard our team pushed each other every day in practice. It goes to show that our team is capable of anything we work hard enough for, and pushes us to achieve even more in seasons to come."

In the women's 4-by-100m freestyle relay, very little separated the medalists. Dal won in a time of 3:54.08.

The REDS team of Collett, Hannah MacLeod, Élodie Martin and Moore were second, In 3:55.67. Acadia took third.

"The team exceeded my expectations," said REDS' head coach Marta Belsh. "I'm proud of the team for stepping up and rallying behind each other. Today was absolutely amazing and speaks volumes to the potential and strength of the team."
