Nestoruk Grabs Silver Medal

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) On day one of the 2023 Subway Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, UNB REDS swimmers captured three medals.

Acadia finished at the top of the podium in nine of the day's 14 events, while Dalhousie won four.

In the first final of the meet, REDS' veteran Jennifer Moore won the women's 50m freestyle in a time of 0:26.64.

In the men's 50m breaststroke, Gordon Shortt of Acadia topped the podium while Ethan Nestoruk of UNB swam second, finishing just 14/100ths of a second ahead of Acadia's Adam Deutsch.

The REDS' third medal came in the women's 100m butterfly, where Hannah Casey edged Dal's Veronica Hollick by a mere 5/100ths of a second. UNB's Hannah MacLeod swam seventh in that race.

In the men's 100m butterfly, UNB swimmers placed sixth, seventh and eighth.

UNB"s Ella Lightheart posted a sixth place finish in the women's 200m individual medley, while Blake Kingston was fourth in the men's 200m IM, missing the medial podium by less than a second.

"We started the final session of the day with a great race from Jenn," said REDS' head coach Marta Belsh. "She won gold in the women's 50 free for the second year in a row. It was a special race that kicked off the rest of the night for us."

"It was awesome to see Hannah and Jennifer on the podium tonight, as they're both graduating this season," added Belsh.
