UNB REDS MEN’S SOCCER

TEAM HISTORY

UNB has a long and strong soccer history.

UNB first fielded a varsity men’s soccer team in 1948. Ever since, the team has proven to be a dominant force at both the conference and national levels.

UNB holds the record for the most Atlantic University Sport conference championships – 17 (1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1967, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1987, 2006, 2013, 2014, 2015).

Under head coach Barry Morrison, in his only season of competition (due to the pandemic), the REDS qualified for the AUS playoffs, advancing to the conference semi-final. UNB has qualified for AUS post-season play in 16 of the past 17 seasons of competition, including six seasons where the REDS earned a first round playoff bye.

The most historic moment in UNB soccer came in 1980 when the REDS won the national championship on their home field, defeating Sir Wilfrid Laurier University 3-1 in the final. Other successes at the national level include the 2013 bronze medal and the 2015 silver medal.

Over the years many players have shone while wearing a UNB uniform. On 54 occasions, REDS players have been acknowledged as AUS All-Stars. 23 times, UNB players have been chosen as All-Canadians. Four REDS have been selected as AUS MVP and five have been named AUS Rookie of the Year. Six times, the REDS head coach has been named AUS Coach of the Year.
