Ottawa W Carreno Joining REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s soccer team is naming winger Diego Carreno, of Ottawa, Ontario, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old Carreno, completing his Grade 12 year at Ottawa’s All Saints Catholic High School, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025 Atlantic University Sport season.
“We’re excited to have Diego joining our program,” said REDS’ head coach Barry Morrison. “He brings great strength and physicality and will certainly be an impact player for our attack right away.”
Carreno is a veteran member of the West Ottawa Soccer Club, having played with their men’s Prem and Elite sides, their U17 Showcase team, and their U16-17 Ontario Player Development League side.
He was a member of the senior and junior varsity teams at All Saints High, earning junior team MVP honours in 2022 and senior team MVP honours in 2024 and 2025.
“I’m always looking to score and create chances for my teammates,” said Carreno. “I can dribble and beat players and create opportunities. As a teammate, I’m able to support my teammates and work hard to help win.”
“Diego brings great experience coming from Ottawa and playing with a very strong cohort of players at the West Ottawa Soccer Club,” said Coach Morrison. “He’ll help to keep our connection with the club strong, as we’ve graduated several West Ottawa players recently.”
Carreno says earning AUS all-star status and winning a conference championship are among his short-term goals as a RED. Longer-term, he’s eyeing All-Canadian status and graduating to pro soccer.
“What appealed to me was the attacking and defending ideologies,” said Carreno. “Being able to play with freedom in a free-flowing attack, and when defending always looking to press quickly to win the ball back high up the pitch. And I was able to choose to specialize in a specific area of my degree and have access to resources to help me be successful as an athlete and a student.”
Carreno will study Business Administration while attending UNB.
