Tigers Upset REDS
(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers upset the U SPORTS No. 10 ranked UNB REDS Saturday, the Tigers first win of the Atlantic University Sport men's soccer season.
Dal opened the scoring in just the ninth minute.
Ben Thompson (Hammonds Plains, NS) put a cross off of a corner kick that was first batted down by Wilfried Kindo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso), but was taken away. Michael Trim (Berwick, NS) forced a turnover on the UNB defender, and volleyed in the first goal of the game.
It only took two minutes for the ball to be in UNB's net again, this time off another giveaway, Benjamin Hashimoto (Charlottetown, PE) was all alone with the UNB keeper, and buried the opportunity to make it 2-0 early.
UNB tried to answer back with Lars Gierull (Ottawa, ON) driving deep in the offensive zone. He found Harrison McGinn (Jewetts Mills, NB) with a wide open net, but he was unable to finish and sent it wide.
Dal entered the second half up 2-0, and started where they left off when Trim sent a ball that found a wide open Mykeo Parker-Christmas in front of the net, who shot a header that went over the top of the net.
In the 58th minute, Trim forced UNB keeper Mahmoud Moustafa (Stratford, PE) to make a great save to keep the margin at two.
In the 82nd minute, UNB's Roan Saengmeng (Charlottetown, PE), on the counter attack, sent a cross crease that was deflected by Trim into the defender's own net, cutting the lead to one.
UNB was unable to find another goal to tie the game, and Dalhousie came away with the upset victory.
The Tigers next action is Wednesday, at Saint Mary's.
The REDS will face Mount Allison on October 13th.
