(SYDNEY, NS) The defending U SPORTS national champions continued their undefeated run by beating the UNB Reds in Sunday’s Subway Atlantic University Sport final.

The Cape Breton Capers, who went 10-0-2 during the regular season, scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 victory and win their third consecutive AUS title.

The Capers used the wind to their advantage and played forward for much of the half. They were able to put 12 shots toward the UNB net. Many sailed wide because of the strong winds and Evan Barker (Winnipeg, MB) pushed aside an attempt midway through the half.

1st-Team AUS All-Star Cory Bent (Preston, UK) scored an incredible goal in the 37th minute. He was able to corral a pass from Joel Eckert-Ayensa (Pulhaim, Germany) and chip the ball over Barker.

Reds striker and AUS Rookie of the Year Tristan Nkoghe (Sherbrooke, QC) received a red card in the 43rd minute from the bench.

Capers keeper Ben Jackson (Bury, UK) didn’t have to face any shots on goal and the half ended with the defending champs leading 1-0.

The wind was with UNB’s attack in the second half, but the Capers were able to control possession and defend well. The Reds were only able to get three shots on goal in second half.

Bent, named Subway Player of the Game and most valuable player of the tournament, earned a penalty in the 78th minute, and Eckert-Ayensa stepped up and delivered from the spot.

The Capers were able to defend the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Barker made some great saves to keep the game at 2-0, stopping four of six shots. Jackson earned the clean sheet by making three saves.

Both teams will now travel to Vancouver for the U SPORTS national championship tournament, being hosted by the University of British Colombia, November 8th to 11th.
