(FREDERICTON, NB) Fifth-year midfielder Marcus Lees(Barrie, ON) has been named a 1st Team All-Canadian and first-year fullback Joe Hamilton(Morecambe, UK) was named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team, for 2017.

The announcement was made Wednesday night, in Kamloops, BC, where Thompson Rivers University is hosting this year’s U SPORTS men’s soccer championship.

The Varsity Reds take on the UBC Thunderbirds in the tournament’s first game, Thursday at 11:00am Pacific/3:00pm Atlantic.

Playing in his final year of eligibility, Lees scored four goals and added three assists. He was a constant threat for opposition defenders, and started all 12 of UNB’s regular season games.

“It was nice to see Marcus, in his final year, be recognized again as one of the best players in the country,” said Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent. “The fact it’s the third time he’s been named an All-Canadian speaks to the tremendous career he’s had for the Varsity Reds.”

Hamilton made an immediate impact on the Varsity Reds.

He too started all 12 regular season games, scoring twice and picking up one assist while providing dependable defence.

“Joe had a great rookie season,” said Pinsent. “His selection to the country’s All-Rookie team speaks to the quality of his performances. He has a bright future with the Varsity Reds.”
