(FREDERICTON, NB) Looking for more offence, the UNB Varsity Reds men’s soccer team is adding some size up front.

The Varsity Reds have received a signed U SPORTS Letter of Intent from 6’3” striker Tristan Nkoghe, of Sherbrooke, QC.

Nkoghe is coming off his second season at Quebec’s Champlain College, where he was the Cougars’ Most Valuable Player and the league’s top scorer. The previous season, he was Champlain’s Rookie of the Year, and in 2015 he helped Les Verts de Sherbrooke capture Quebec’s Senior AAA championship.

La Federation de Soccer du Quebec recently named Nkoghe one of the province’s top two under-21 players, and playing with a Sherbrooke club team, he was the top scorer at the 2016 version of the prestigious Virginian Elite Soccer Tournament.

“The thing I’m looking forward to the most is helping the Varsity Reds reach their full potential and contribute as much as I can in building chemistry with every player on the team,” said Nkoghe.

Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent hopes Nkoghe can add some punch to his team’s game.

“After last season, it was evident that our team needed to get bigger and we needed to create more offence,” said Pinsent. “Tristan will help in both of these departments. He’s an athletic 6’3” and his combination of pace, power and skill will make him a match-up nightmare for our opponents.”

Nkoghe plans on studying Sociology.

Pinsent has also received a signed U SPORTS Letter of Intent from Joe Hamilton, a centre-back from Morecambe, England.

“I chose UNB because I was really impressed with the soccer program, the fantastic facilities, and the staff,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton is completing his second year at Lancaster & Morecambe College, where he’s working under the guidance of UEFA qualified coaches. He helped LMC win two league titles, captaining the school’s team during his second season.

Hamilton has also seen playing time with Morecambe FC and Lancashire FA teams.

“Joe is an intelligent centre-back whose experience will enable him to step in and play a prominent role right away,” said Pinsent. “He’s a modern-day defender who can shut down the opposition and also help us play out of our end to start our attack.”

Hamilton plans to study Business.

Both players will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2017-18 season.
