(SYDNEY, NS)  The CBU Capers beat the UNB Varsity Reds 1-0 in the final of the 2017 Subway Atlantic University Sport Championship.

The Capers got a first half goal from captain Stuart Heath(Belfast, IRE), assisted by tournament MVP Charlie Waters(Lancashire, UK). Waters made a cross into the box that was headed into the corner of the net by Heath.

Cape Breton outshot the Varsity Reds 10-5 and controlled possession for roughly three quarters of the game.

The V-Reds applied pressure during the final 15 minutes, but the Capers defence held strong.

Marcus Lees(Barrie, ON) was named Subway Player of the Game for UNB while Cory Bent(Preston, UK) was named Subway Player of the Game for CBU. Waters was named tournament MVP. He had a hand in all six goals the Capers scored on the weekend.

Cape Breton has now won back-to-back AUS titles for the first time in school history.

The Capers are the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked team as they head to the national championship tournament. The Varsity Reds will compete in the U SPORTS Championship as well, their fifth trip to the national tournament in six years.

That event takes place in Kamloops, BC, Nov. 9-12, hosted by Thompson Rivers University,
