V-Reds have date with X-Men in AUS semis
(SYDNEY, NS) The No. 3 seeded UNB Varsity Reds rode three first half goals to a 3-0 win over the No. 6 Memorial University Sea-Hawks in the quarter-final round at the 2017 Subway Atlantic University Sport men's soccer championship, in Sydney, NS.
Alex O'Brien(Charlottetown, PE) scored what would turn out to be the game-winner just four minutes in.
He got a head on a shot by Max Vitrotti(London, UK) and deflected it into the Memorial net.
Luis Garcia(San Antonio, TEX) and Dan Walker(Fredericton, NB) added goals about two minutes apart late in the half.
Garcia was named the Subway Player of the Game.
The V-Reds played solid defence in the second half, earning a berth in the semi-final round.
Evan Barker(Winnipeg, MB) was called on to make just one save to earn the clean sheet in the Varsity Reds net.
UNB will now face the No. 2 seeded St FX X-Men, Friday at 7:00pm.
The X-Men finished the regular season in second place with a 9-1-2 record.
The two teams met only once during the regular season, at UNB's BMO Centre, on September 17th. X scored a late goal to escape with a 1-0 win.
