(WOLFVILLE, NS) A late goal, which came off a rebound from a penalty kick, allowed the Acadia Axemen to salvage a 1-1 draw with the UNB Varsity Reds.

Matthew Berrigan(Halifax, NS) got hold of the rebound from his own penalty kick in the 83rd minute, firing the ball past a sprawling Evan Barker(Winnipeg, MB) in the UNB net.

A diving Barker stopped the penalty, but couldn't corral the rebound.

The Axemen came into the Atlantic University Sport season-opening match as the 8th ranked team in U SPORTS.

That did little to intimidate the Varsity Reds, who were the dominant team in the first half, pushing deep into Acadia territory numerous times.

Third year midfielder Oisin McKenna(Nashua, NH) opened the scoring, connecting on a beautiful crossing pass from Marcus Lees(Barrie, ON) in the 24th minute.

Alex O'Brien(Charlottetown, PE) had an opportunity to give UNB the lead with a penalty kick in the 89th minute, but Axemen keeper Nic Jeffries(Rothesay, NB) made the stop. Jeffries was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Varsity Reds continue their season-opening road trip on Saturday, visiting Dalhousie for a 5:15pm kick-off.

Acadia will host Dal on Sunday.
