Varsity Reds And Redmen Draw

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with the McGill Redmen, Sunday, in exhibition play.

The Varsity Reds appeared to have the edge in creating chances, especially in the first half.

UNB put early pressure on the Redmen, and that pressure resulted in a goal, in the 33rd minute. Diego Padihla scored off a perfectly executed corner kick, giving the home side a 1-0 edge.

The VReds dominated first half possession, and had opportunities to score a second goal.

The Varsity Reds continued to control possession time in the second half, but the game became chippy, as the Redmen appeared to grow frustrated.

But, in the 69th minute, a momentary lapse in concentration cost the VReds.

Takeshi Kakudo's goal drew the visitors even.

UNB was unable to convert on a free kick from just outside the box.

McGill remains in Fredericton, and will face Dalhousie, on Monday, at BMO Centre.

The Varsity Reds take on Dal, on Tuesday.

UNB, the three-time defending Atlantic University Sport champs, begin their quest for a four-peat when the open the regular season, on the road, September 10th, at Cape Breton University.
