Ellingwood And Quigley Choose UNB
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds men’s soccer team has added two more prized recruits.
Nick Ellingwood, of Quispamsis, and Matt Quigley, of Conquerall Mills, NS, have signed CIS Letters of Intent to join the three-time and defending Atlantic University Sport champions.
NICK ELLINGWOOD
The 18-year old midfielder was named Soccer NB’s male player of the year in 2015.
Currently attending Bernice MacNaughton High School, in Moncton, as part of Soccer NB’s High Performance Academy, he plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science.
“I chose UNB because it has a well-respected science program and their soccer program is one of the best in the country,” said Ellingwood. “Their commitment to year-round training is everything I wanted in a soccer program.”
The player of the year award followed a season in which Ellingwood captained Team NB’s under 18 side, helped Fundy United’s Senior A team to the provincial final, and was invited to the Montreal Impact U18 Academy tryouts.
In 2014, Ellingwood captained Fundy’s U16 Premier AAA side that won the New Brunswick championship, played with Team NB’s U18 squad and the Team Atlantic U16 side.
“Nick is a hard-working player who has a big physical presence on the field,” said Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent. “His work ethic and personality enable him to be a great teammate, with natural leadership abilities.”
MATT QUIGLEY
Matt Quigley has some big cleats to fill.
His older sister, Emma, is a former captain of the Varsity Reds women’s soccer team.
The Conquerall Mills, Nova Scotia, native joins the men’s team, coming from Shattuck St. Mary’s prep school, in Minnesota.
Quigley has also been a member of Nova Scotia provincial teams and Team Atlantic sides.
He plans to study Kinesiology, just like his sister did.
“I was encouraged to choose UNB by my sister,” said Quigley. “I decided for myself, when I visited the campus and learned of the strong academic and athletic programs.”
As part of the Shattuck St. Mary’s team, Quigley competed in the ultra-competitive U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoff tournament.
“I look forward to earning my playing time and having an impact on a winning season,” he said.
“Matt is an intelligent player with great vision,” said Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent. “I’m excited about Matt joining our program, not only for his soccer skills, but also for his exceptional personal character.”
Both Ellingwood and Quigley will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2016-17 season.
