UNB opens at number 3 in CIS Top 10

(OTTAWA, ONT.) Canadian university soccer is taking notice of the UNB Varsity Reds men's squad, ranking them number three in the country in the first Top Ten released by the CIS this season.

Reigning champion Laval (women) and York (men) top the first national rankings of the 2015 CIS soccer season. 

In men’s competition, York earned its first season-opening No. 1 ranking since 2011. Rounding out the leading quintet are UQAM, UNB, McMaster and UBC.

Last fall in Charlottetown, the Lions claimed their fourth Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy thanks to a thrilling 1-0 victory against McMaster in an all-OUA national final. After going 1-0-1 in preseason action, York once again edged the Marauders on Sunday to kick off the new OUA schedule, this time by a 3-2 score in Hamilton. 

In 2014, the Varsity Reds finished first in the AUS conference for the third year in a row with an unbeaten record of 11-0-2 and went on to win their second consecutive conference championship. UNB suffered a disappointing shoot-out loss in the quarter-final of the CIS national championship. The squad has welcomed several strong recruits for the 2015 season and is looking to make a big impression.
