Varsity Reds top Tigers 3-0

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) The UNB Varsity Reds men's soccer topped the Dalhousie Tigers 3-0 in regular season action on Fredericton's BMO Field.

The Varsity Reds, who finished 2014 undefeated in the regular season, came into the match off of a double-loss opening weekend, falling to Cape Breton and StFX in a series of away games. This early into the season, the Tigers have picked up a win and a loss, topping Mount Allison 7-0 and falling to Acadia 0-3.

The first half presented a flurry of chances for the Varsity Reds, most of them at the feet of striker Oliver Jones (London, UK.). Jones eventually managed to connect and found the net at the 30th minute. UNB would go into halftime up 1-0.

Jones would score again in the 85th minute, stretching the Varsity Reds' lead to two. Just over three minutes later, Robbie Park (Glasgow, Scot.) beat the Tigers keeper Jason Ross (Bedford, N.S.) on a penalty kick to make it 3-0.

Jones was Player of the Game for UNB.  Player of the Game for Dalhousie was Zach Mbolekwa.

UNB's head coach Miles Pinsent attributed this win to having a healthy squad compared to last weekend's games. "We had a few guys out of the line up and they are slowly coming back to health. Our line up on the field was a little bit stronger today. We were able to work out a few things in training this week especially defensively."

The Varsity Reds play next when they host SMU tomorrow at 3:15pm.

The Tigers travel to Moncton to play les Aigles Bleus at the same time.
