UNB shutout X-Men 2-0 in AUS soccer action

(ANTIGONISH, NS) - The first place UNB Varsity Reds, ranked #4 in the CIS, remained unbeaten in AUS men's soccer play Friday night with a 2-0 win over the StFX X-Men at Oland Stadium.

In front of more than 300 fans, Shea Nordheim (Winnipeg, MB) opened the scoring in the 49th minute with what proved to be the game-winner. His shot inside the far post eluded X-Men keeper Sam Hutchison (Victoria, BC) low to the right side.

Oliver Jones (London, UK) doubled the UNB advantage in the 63rd minute. After getting behind the StFX defenders, he scored on a low shot that Hutchison got a piece of with his outstretched left hand.

The teams were scoreless at halftime.

The X-Men had the bulk of the first-half scoring changes, but they were thwarted by Varsity Red goalkeeper Aaron McMurray (London, ON) who recorded the shutout and earned Subway player of the match honours.

StFX got their best opportunity in the 12th minute off the foot of sophomore Natneal Tecle (Calgary, AB). McMurray made a point-blank save to keep it scoreless.

In the 23rd minute, the fifth-year senior corralled a left-footed shot from Dylan Lawrence (Ottawa, ON).

The Varsity Reds (5-0-1) return to action Saturday, Sept 27, when they visit the Mount Allison Mounties (2-3-1) in Sackville, NB.

The X-Men (2-2-2) will host the Cape Breton University Capers (2-2-1) Sunday, Sept. 28. Match time is 3:15 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
