Varsity Reds defeat Sea-Hawks 4-0

(ST. JOHN'S, NL.) The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 4-0 in the AUS men's soccer home opener. In the 32nd minute, Oliver Jones netted himself his first unassisted goal of the season to lead the way for the Varsity Reds.

In the second half, Kellen Kuipers, Marcus Lees, and Eric Frey of UNB each scored an unassisted goal. Jones was named the AUS Subway Player of the Game.

Veteran Taedy O'Rourke had one of two shots on goal for the Sea-Hawks, followed by rookie Ryan Thistle. Memorial was also dealing with the loss of a few starters due to injury. 2013 MVP Jordi Slaney was out of the game due to a quad injury, as well as Kyle Williams, and Taylor Smith. By the end of the game, veteran Matthew Hamlyn and second year Aaron Anstey were added to that list.

Memorial head coach Scott Betts believes the match was closer than the score dictates.

"We had a couple of lapses in the second half that we got punished for, but that speaks to the quality of the league," he said. "You make a mistake or lose your focus and you quickly find yourself picking the ball out of the back of your goal."

He added, "We stayed solid defensively for 65 minutes, but we are going to have to play a full 90 minutes to succeed."

The Sea-Hawks get their second chance against the Varsity Reds on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:15pm.
