CIS - Consolation # 2 McMaster eliminates UNB 2-1
November 10, 2012
QUEBEC CITY -In consolation number two of the CIS men's soccer championship the McMaster Marauders came from behind to eliminate the Varsity Reds 2-1.
The Varsity Reds scored early just 13 minutes into the game with a goal from Toronto native Yousuf Mohammad on a pass from midfielder Pablo Urbina.
In the 26th minute, Mohammad tried to surprise McMaster’s keeper, who had come up in front of his net. The striker took a long-range shot from midfield and Cavalluzzo had to run back and jump to barely punch the ball up and over the crossbar and out of play.
The V-Reds got four more shots in the half but were unable to find the back of the McMaster net.
Heading into the locker room the score remained 1-0. Shots on goal at half time were tied with both keepers facing six a piece.
In the second half the first twenty five to thirty minutes of the game were fairly uneventful and played mostly in the midfield with neither team able to press forward.
Western tied the game with a goal from Marco Gennaccaro with 74:43 on the clock. The Marauders then followed with the game winning goal by David Scarafini at 84:57 on a pass from Mark Reilly.
The V-Reds were unable to come back from the deficit and had managed just three shots on goal during the second half while UNB keeper Aaron McMurray faced nine.
The loss marks the end of the championship for the Varsity Reds who were clearly a very tired team. UNB's bench was smaller this than normal this year which may have been a factor in their loss.
“With games like this, you’re always curious to see which team rebounds best from the disappointment of the day before. We started alright, but I think there were a lot of tired bodies on the field, and it kind of took its toll as the game wore on,” said Pinsent.
Players of the game were McMaster’s Mark Reilly and UNB’s Ben Law.
