CIS- UNB men??s soccer lose to powerhouse UBC
November 8, 2012
QUEBEC CITY - In their opening game at the CIS men’s soccer championship at Laval University the Varsity Reds lost their first game against UBC 4-0 in quarter final #2.
The Thunderbirds, who recorded a new Canada West record of 45 goals scored over the regular season, set a fast paced, offensive game, right from the opening whistle scoring three goals in the first half and a quick one just thirty seconds into the second half.
“The UBC team is a good side and I think it took my boys a little too long to adjust to the pace in which UBC attacked, and I think that was the difference in the game,” commented coach Miles Pinsent.
“They scored some goals early and put us back on our heels a bit. But as soon as our boys recovered from that I was pleased with how we played for long stretches of the game,” continued Pinsent.
UNB will host the CIS championship next year and Pinsent managed to get everyone into the game today and felt that it was a valuable experience for all the players including keeper Brandon Eagle who played the last nine minutes for the V-Reds.
“Brandon is young keeper coming up and we thought we’d give him some minutes in the big games so that he’s more comfortable in big games for us in the future,” said Pinsent.
The Varsity Reds will meet McMaster at 1:30 on Friday and the UNB team will be ready. “The whistle will blow tomorrow and there’s another game to be played and a game to be won so I don’t think we’ll change our approach in anyway,” continued Pinsent.
