Varsity Reds advance to CIS Menā??s Soccer Championship
November 4, 2012
The UNB Varsity Reds lost their bid for the Subway AUS Men’s Soccer Championship today, losing 2-0 to the Cape Breton Capers in the Championship final at UPEI.
For the most part the first half of the game was played in the midfield with few scoring chances coming from either team.
The V-Reds were missing back Roderick Ramsden, sitting out the game due to a red card in yesterday’s semi-final against the Dal Tigers.
The V-Reds had two excellent scoring opportunities in the first half - the first at the 25 minute mark when Jason Rouse took a free kick deep in Caperland. The second opportunity for the V-Reds was the result of another free kick later in the half, when Alexandre Haiart managed a header that was tipped over the crossbar by the Caper goalkeeper.
The lone goal came late in the first half on a long, curving 25 yard blast that eluded keeper Aaron McMurray.
Score 1-0 at the half.
In the second half of the game the Varsity Reds came out and looked to take control of the game, pressing the Capers hard and forcing them into a defensive game for most of the half.
Despite corner after corner and free kick after free kick, the Varsity Reds hit posts and sides of nets but most of all a hot keeper and strong defence from the Capers.
With three minutes left on the clock the Capers scored their second goal of the game bringing the final score to 2-0.
Second team all-star Jason Bessey was named player of the game for UNB.
Both teams will advance to the CIS Championship at Laval University. Quarter final play gets under way on Thursday, November 8th. The full schedule and seeding will be announced by Canadian Interuniversity Sport on Monday – www.cis-sic.ca
