Men's soccer struggle in home opener
September 17, 2011
Officially renaming Chapman Field, BMO Centre today, the UNB Varsity Reds men's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Saint Mary's Huskies in a one-sided affair.
"It's so important for our program and such an honour to be associated with an institution like BMO and all the things they're trying to do nationwide with soccer so we're proud to be part of that," said men's soccer head coach Miles Pinsent. "Their support is hopefully going to help us take the steps forward with our program that we need to to be a national contender."
In front of a near capacity crowd at BMO Centre the Huskies would draw first blood against the hometown Varsity Reds in the 31st minute as Derek Gaudet put the ball past UNB keeper Aaron McMurray to give SMU a 1-0 lead.
Kevin Madani would score seven minutes later to put the Huskies up 2-0, a lead they would take into halftime.
Evira Gigolaj would score two goals in the second half for the Huskies in the 66th and 81st minute to cushion the Huskies lead as the Varsity Reds struggled to have little offensive pressure against the Saint Mary's defence.
Pinsent says his team has a lot to work on still.
"We've got a long way to go I guess," he said. "We've played three games to date and in two of those performances been quite disappointed with what we've seen on the field. Obviously today was a championship calibre team in Saint Mary's and they showed us all about what that level is about. My guys did not react well to it."
Pinsent says the Huskies outplayed them in everyway.
"Saint Mary's was better than us in most every part of the game and there wasn't a whole lot that we did well so you throw those two things into the equation and I guess it's going to end up 4-0."
The Varsity Reds will take on the Dalhousie Tigers at 3:15 p.m. tomorrow at BMO Centre.
