UNB unable to capitalize on chances - UNB 1 vs CBU 2
MONCTON, NB - Playing in the first quarterfinal of the AUS Subway men’s soccer championship the fifth ranked UNB Varsity Reds lost 2-1 to fourth ranked CBU Capers played at the Stade Moncton Stadium located on the campus of Université de Moncton.
The Capers scored both goals in the first half with Keishen Bean putting it past UNB’s net minder Aaron McMurray at the 35th minute followed quickly with his second at the 37th minute. Those goals were to go unanswered in the first by UNB.
UNB chose to play into the wind in the first half and UNB head coach Miles Pinsent commented that, “It was a typical playoff game in that it was always going to be a close one with the weather conditions being what they were the wind blowing straight down the field, it definitely was going to influence how both teams played.”
“Both goals were a result of us not taking care of the loose balls in our own end which you need to do playing into the wind. They took full advantage of it. In the second half with the wind at our back I thought we pushed the agenda and we had our chances,” continued Pinsent.
In the second half senior and graduating student-athlete Galen Smith scored for the V-Reds in the 29th minute to rally the troops who had a number of opportunities to score in the second half. “The big guy came through for us, like he did in the last game of the season to secure a play-off spot. We know we can rely on him in critical times to help us and he did today. We had a couple of other chances as well that we would have liked to have buried,” commented coach Miles Pinsent.
With the final score of 2-1 UNB’s soccer was brought quickly to a close. “It was a tough way to lose obviously. I was pleased with how we played on the day, especially the second half, and that’s the game of soccer,” said Pinsent.
