Weekly Update - October 16
OCTOBER 16
After two weeks of good training, the V-Reds made the long trek to Sydney for the rematch with CBU. The game started much like the last one ended, with the Capers dominating the play. Before the Reds could get settled the Capers made it 1-0 when a in-swinging free kicked skipped past everyone including Aaaron MacMurray in the UNB goal.
After this the UNB side started to defend better and by the end of the first half they had created a couple of good attempts at the Capers goal. As the game wore on, more and more of the play was dictated by UNB. The Back-line limited CBU's time and space, the midfield won the majority of the battles, and the front runners looked dangerous on the counter-attacks. UNB got the equalizer on a free kick when Brad Cowperthwaite's cross has headed home by a diving Yassin Chehab el din. UNB continued to create opportunities but failed to either hit the net or beat the CBU keeper.
FINAL SCORE: UNB-1, CBU-1
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: YASSIN CHEHAB EL DIN IRVING HARD WINNERS: SHEA NORDHEIM & WILL ALLEN
OCTOBER 17
On Sunday, the team's bizarre schedule saw us travel from Sydney to Sackville to face the Mounties. The Varsity Reds controlled the play for the magority of the game and MTA never really threatened to score.
Rory Keys headed home UNB's first goal and Shea Nordheim completed a nice build-up for UNB's second. Aaron MacMurray recorded his third shut-out of the season.
FINAL SCORE: UNB-2, MTA-0
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: SHEA NORDHEIM
IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: JASON BESSEY & ROD RAMSDEN
Mr. Terry Kelly(member of the original UNB team of 1948) attended the game at MTA. The boys on the team enjoyed meeting him and hearing a few of his stories.
COACH'S COMMENTS:
It was nice to have the two weeks between games so that we could focus our training on some specific areas that we needed to improve upon.
Overall it was a good week-end; decent results on the road and much improved play from the team.
