MOUNT ALLISON AT UNB
The 2010 edition of the Varsity Reds opened the season by hosting MTA. UNB came out strong and the immediate pressure paid off when at the two minute mark rookie Yassin Chehab el din drove a Shea Nordheim corner past the Mounties’ keeper. It was only moments later when MTA rallied to tie as a quickly taken free-kick got behind a startled V-Reds backline and Pat Burt tapped in for the Mounties. UNB was relentless with their pressure, winning numerous challenges, and constantly putting the MTA backline under pressure. At the 35th minute, recently brought in winger Amir Razak was first to the ball at the top of the Mounties’ box and he drove a low shot home. The second half saw Mount A try to push forward for the equalizer but UNB’s backline never gave up another scoring chance.
FINAL SCORE: UNB – 2, MOUNT ALLISON – 0
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: YASSIN CHEHAB EL DIN
UNB IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: RORY KEYS & RYAN LAUZON

UNB AT SAINT MARY’S
For their second game of the season, UNB had to travel to Halifax to face SMU. The 24 hour turn-around and long bus ride seemed to affect the V-Reds’ legs. SMU was more than capable of taking it to a flat UNB side and the first half saw the majority of play in the Reds end. A couple of good saves from rookie keeper Aaron MacMurray saw the teams go into the half tied at zero.
UNB started the second half with more energy and were looking like a much more competitive side. It was ten minutes into the second frame when SMU countered against the run of play and finished with a cracker of a shot to the far top corner. The UNB boys battled hard to even the score. Their best chances came when Yassin Chehab el din headed onto a post and Jason Bessey was pulled down on a break-away created by a clever flick from Galen Smith.
FINAL SCORE: UNB – 0, SMU – 1
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: JASON BESSEY
UNB IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: RYAN LAUZON & JAMES GREEN
