Mixed results for locals in Week 1
University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds earned a weekend split as play in the Atlantic University Sport men's soccer conference kicked off for the season.
On Saturday, the V-Reds were 2-1 winners over Mount Allison Mounties at Chapman Field.
Scoring goals were Yassim Chehab El Din at 2:12 and Amir Razak at 38:01 for the winners. Aaron McMurray made three saves in the UNB goal.
Lone Mount A marker was by Patrick Burtt at 7:22 of the first half. Travis Sandberg had five saves for Mount A.
Sunday, the V-Reds were 1-0 losers to Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax, completing a weekend sweep for the Huskies. They edged Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus 1-0 Saturday.
In AUS women's conference action, the Varsity Reds were only able to earn a single point out of a possible six in their two games to open the regular-season schedule.

Sunday, the V-Reds lost 4-1 to Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax. The Huskies were 2-0 losers to Universite de Moncton on Saturday. Moncton and Dalhousie played to a scoreless tie Sunday.
