Weekly Update - September 24th
UNB at UPEI
UNB made the trek to PEI to for a Friday night game under the lights. Road wins on the Island are hard to come by but the UNB boys were up for the challenge. The V-Reds started strong, winning challenges and being first to most balls. UNB midfield’s (Bessey, Lauzon, Nordheim, and Campeau) aggressive play created numerous turn-overs that lead to quality counter-attacks. Smith and Allen upfront linked well and each took a number of decent chances on goal. The back four (Ramsden, Chehab el bin, Cowperthwaite, Green) were solid. Aaron MacMurray was strong in goal dealing with the wet conditions well as he had to be sharp on a couple of dangerous Panther shots.
It was twelve minutes into the second half that UNB was rewarded for their efforts. Brad Cowperthwaite converted from in close on a loose ball off of a corner kick. Will Allen and Jason Bessey both rang powerful shots off of the UPEI crossbar. Over the final fifteen minutes, the Panthers pushed hard to equalize but the Reds’ determination kept the sheet clean.
FINAL SCORE: UNB-1, UPEI – 0
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: AARON MACMURRAY
IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: JASON BESSEY & SHEA NORDHEIM
