Weekly Update - September 19
SEPTEMBER 19TH
UNB Hosting STFX
The Varsity Reds were in for a challenging day as they welcomed the undefeated X-Men to Chapman Field. The game proved to be a very hard fought and competitive affair. Both sides looked to concentrate players in the middle of the field leading to tight quarters and a number of stiff challenges. Both team’s offenses were finding it difficult to break through the opposition’s backlines. UNB’s Galen Smith had the best chance of the first half when his header hit off of the crossbar. The deadlock continued on into the second half. Just when it looked like neither team were going to be able to get a decisive chance on goal, STFX scored when a deflected corner kick was crushed top corner by Jamaal Dixon. UNB tried to press for the equalizer but composed play from the X-Men made this difficult. The V-Reds best chance came when Shea Nordheim got behind the STFX backline but his shot from a tough angle did not trouble the keeper.
FINAL SCORE: UNB-0, STFX-1
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: ROD RAMSDEN
UNB IRVING HARD HAT WINNER: ROD RAMSDEN
COACH’S COMMENTS:
The team’s last two games have been against, what I consider to be a couple of the top teams in the league. While there is some satisfaction in knowing that we competed well in these games, we definitely know that we are capable of better.
