Axemen Down REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS suffered their first loss of the 2024 season on Saturday
afternoon, falling 29-18 to the Acadia Axemen at UNB’s College Field.
“The guys played great today as a collective and communicated very well, but unfortunately we
struggled defensively,” said REDS’ head coach Niklas Wood.
“I'm not sure we were prepared for the level of play that Acadia brought today, but we played
hard and didn’t give up till the last minute,” added Wood.
The REDS were the first to get on the scoreboard, kicking a drop goal early in the first half.
Not long after, the Axemen scored a try, taking a 5-3 lead.
After another drop goal by the REDS and a try followed by a conversion kick from the Axemen,
the visiting team ended the first half with a 12-6 advantage.
To start the second half, the Axemen extended their lead by scoring another try.
Keegan Gilbert attempted to close the gap for the REDS, scoring a try and converting the kick to
bring the score to 17-13.
“Keegan had an incredible match both offensively and defensively,” said Coach Wood. “He has grown a lot and has become an incredible player.”
The REDS' efforts fell short, despite scoring another try.
The visiting team responded with two and a conversion kick, securing a 29-18 win.
“As a team, we do not strive for perfection, instead we focus on making progress and improving
with each game,” said Wood. “That is our plan as we move forward this season.”
