(OTTAWA, ON) The UNB REDS two-year run as the champions of Canadian university men’s hockey has come to an end.
The two-time and defending champion REDS, the top-ranked team at the 2025 University Cup, fell 3-2 in overtime to the No. 8 seed and host Ottawa Gee Gees in a Thursday night quarter-final.
“We went six straight without losing one, so eventually it’s going to happen,” said REDS head coach Rob Hennigar after the game. “It’s tough. One and dones are extremely hard when the expectations are that you’ll come out and win and dominate the game. At times we did that tonight, then faded as it went.”
“Give Ottawa credit, I thought they played well tonight. I thought their best period was the overtime,” he added.”
The REDS opened the scoring 13:06 into the game on a Benjamin Corbeil one-timer from the top of the faceoff circle.
Ottawa tied the score 1-1 late in the second period.
Nearing the mid-way point of the third period and with the REDS on the power-play, Cody Morgan took a Cole MacKay pass and one-timed UNB’s second goal.
The home team would draw even once again with less than 90 seconds to play.
Marc-Antoine Seguin’s re-direct at 16:04 of overtime won the game for the Gee Gees.
Samuel Richard made 19 saves on 22 shots in the UNB net.
Ottawa’s Franky Lapenna stopped 41 of 43 shots on the Gee Gees’ net.
Ottawa will face Toronto Metropolitan University in Saturday’s semi-finals. TMU beat Mount Royal in a game that wasn’t decided until the fifth overtime period, more than six hours after it started.
