REDS Score Road Wins
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS scored four times in the third period Saturday night, beating the Saint Mary’s Huskies 6-2 in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action, in Halifax.
The road win was the second in as many nights for the REDS, who rallied from two goals down to beat Acadia 3-2, in overtime, on Friday, in Wolfville.
“It was a gritty weekend for us,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “There was great resilience shown on Friday being down two early and finding a way to score late and then win it in overtime. Saturday was a tough match-up and we needed a huge kill, five on three, for a full two minute to help us get the win.”
Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON) led the REDS on Saturday, scoring twice and adding as assist, while Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) and Mike Petizian (Mississauga, ON) each had a goal and two assists.
Drew Elliott (Musquash, NB) and Oliver Peer (Burlington, ON) also scored for UNB and Cody Morgan (Gilford, ON) registered two assists.
Remi Delafrontaine (Sherbrooke, QC) made 40 saves on 42 shots to earn the win in the UNB net.
On Friday, the REDS fell behind 2-0 before Peer scored twice to pull UNB even and force overtime.
Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) tipped home the OT winner.
Delafontaine won in his REDS and AUS debut, making 23 saves on 25 shots.
“Remi was solid in both games and gave us a chance to win,” said Coach Hennigar. “I thought Oliver Peer stepped up and provided timely scoring when needed, and our leadership group did a great job in both games.”
With the two victories, the REDS improve to 19-1-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and maintain their hold on top spot in the AUS standings.
With nine regular season games to play, UNB has clinched playoff spot.
The REDS will return to home ice Friday, when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a 7:00pm start.
UNB will then take on STFX in a rare Saturday matinee. Game time is 4:00pm.
