REDS Add Goaltender Delafontaine
(FREDERICTON, NB) The defending U SPORTS and Atlantic University Sport champion UNB REDS men’s hockey team is adding goaltender Remi Delafontaine for the remainder of the 2024-2025 AUS season and beyond.
The 20-year-old began the season with the Blainville-Boisbriand Aramada, of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, playing in 18 games and posting a 7-7-1 (W-L-T) record and a 3.35 goals against average.
Before joining the Aramda, Delafontaine played for Chicoutimi, Shawinigan, and Cape Breton.
“We were already looking at him for next year, and then when this transpired, we thought why not bring him in now and we had the ability to do so,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “He played Josh last year in the first round and he was really good against them, so we had a good scouting report on him and kind of went from there.”
Last spring, as a member of the Chicoutimi Saugeneens, Delafontaine helped lead his team to a first-round sweep of the Moncton Wildcats. He was in net for all four of the Sags’ victories. Current REDS associate coach Josh Hepditch was an assistant coach with the Wildcats then.
“We’re excited to get him here with Sam and Tanner and Xavier,” said Coach Hennigar. “Just to grow with the group. I think he can learn a lot from Sam. Obviously Sam graduates, so it’s nice to have him in the mix. I think there’s a ton of potential there.”
Delafontaine says he sees the mid-season transition as one door closing and another opening.
“There were too many 20-year-olds in Blainville and they decided to make some cuts and go younger,” he said. “But I’m excited to be here and excited for the challenge. I was thinking about this move, but maybe towards the end of the season. It’s come up a little bit earlier than I thought, but this appears to be a good path for me to continue here.”
Delafontaine says he’s excited to be joining the defending national champions.
“They know how to win here. I want to win, so that had a big impact on my decision to come here.”
“I look forward to seeing him grow,” added Hennigar. “He’s a young guy. Goalies generally take a little bit more time. We’ll be patient with him and see how it goes.”
Delafontaine won’t declare his major until next fall.
