(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS scored twice in a span of 22 seconds late in the third period to earn a 5-2 win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action, Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC) scored with 2:53 to play, his second goal of the game, and Peter Reynolds (Fredericton, NB) followed with just 2:31 left on the clock.
That broke open what had been a close contest, and the REDS won their 12th consecutive game.
Reynolds' goal was his AUS and U SPORTS leading 20th of the season.
For his two-goal effort, Corbeil was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Justin Nolet (Mississauga, ON) assisted on three of UNB's goals.
Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB) and Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) each had a goal and an assist and Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) made 12 saves on 14 shots.
Peyton Hoyt (Fredericton, NB) and Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) scored for the Axemen and Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) made 31 saves on 36 shots. Ethan Ernst (Weyburn, SK) had a pair of assists.
After falling behind 2-0, the visitors were able to pull even at 2-2 in the second period.
But 34 seconds after Burns tied the game, McCallum restored UNB's lead, and the REDS never looked back.
With the win, the REDS are now 24-1-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL). They remain atop the conference standings.
The Axemen drop to 11-13-1-1 and sit fifth.
Acadia returns home to host Saint Mary's on Friday night while the REDS head to Antigonish to face the STFX X-Men. Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm starts.
