REDS Blank Panthers
(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The UNB REDS skated back into the win column on Wednesday night, beating the UPEI Panthers 2-0 in a mid-week game in Charlottetown.
Peter Reynolds' (Fredericton, NB) late second period goal stood as the winner as the REDS recorded their third shutout of the season and third win over the Panthers.
Moments after UPEI had killed off a penalty and sent the puck into the UNB zone, a poorly timed line change gave the REDS a 5-on-3 advantage.
Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) fed a no-look backhand pass to Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON), who found an open Reynolds at the edge of the right faceoff dot. He one-timed the puck past Joe Ranger (Carp, ON) to get UNB on the board, 1-0.
In the third period, it became clear the Panthers had run out of gas, but for over half the period, they did everything they could to deny the REDS.
But with UNB on the power-play, Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC) finished a tic-tac-toe play with a shot from the left-wing that easily flew past Ranger's blocker to extend the REDS' lead to 2-0.
With the win, UNB gets back on the winning track after last Saturday's loss at STFX.
McGurn was an impressive 20-for-27 in the faceoff circle for the REDS and Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) stopped all 24 shots he faced.
Ranger made 41 saves on 43 shots in the Panthers' net.
UPEI is now 5-10-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and fifth in the Atlantic University Sport standings. They visit Moncton on Saturday night.
The REDS are now 13-1-1-0 and will play host to les Aigles Bleus on Friday night. Game time is 7:00pm.
