REDS Blank Bold To Capture Pete Kelly Cup
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS offence erupted for four goals in the second period to cruise to a 5-0 victory over the TMU Bold on Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Forward Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC) scored two goals to help the REDS capture the 2023 Peterbilt Pete Kelly Cup, outscoring the Bold 12-3 over the two-game series.
"I think we played really well tonight," said Corbeil. "Especially in the first two periods. We focused on limiting their shot opportunities and creating separation on the scoreboard."
It was a chippy affair to start the first period. Both teams combined for 38 minutes in penalties in the opening frame.
Corbeil opened the scoring for the REDS at 17:16 of the first period. The second-year forward took a cross-ice pass from Cody Morgan (Gilford, ON) and blew it past the glove of Bold goaltender Ryan Dugas (Hamilton, ON) to give UNB the 1-0 lead.
"I felt I had good legs tonight," said Corbeil "I just tried to put the puck on net and see what happens. My linemates played great tonight as well. I hope we're going to keep playing together, we have good chemistry and we're just hard workers so that helps to get the puck and try to create offensively."
The REDS came alive in the second period netting four goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Adam McCormick (Waterville, NB), Cole MacKay (Sault. Ste. Marie, ON), and Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON) all contributed goals for UNB, while Corbeil added his second of the night late in the period.
"Every second period we try to separate ourselves from our opponents," said Corbeil. "We try to do our best to create space in the score so that we can focus on protecting the lead in the third."
Corbeil was named Tim's Hortons Played of the Game after his two-goal performance.
REDS goalie Griffin Outhouse (Williams Lake, BC) made 19 saves to earn the shutout win.
UNB finishes the pre-season undefeated with a record of 4-and-0 and now shifts focus to Atlantic University Sport regular season play.
The REDS open their season at home on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 pm against the Moncton Aigles Bleus.
