Richard Named AUS Rookie Of The Year

(FREDERICTON, NB) UNB REDS’ goaltender Samuel Richard has been named the Atlantic University Sport Rookie of the Year.

Richard was named among the conference’s major award winners, on Tuesday.

The first-year goalie, from Ste. Catherine, QC, had an impressive rookie season.

He posted an 18-4 record, the most wins in U SPORTS, a U SPORTS best 1.59 goals against average, and a save percentage of .933.

Richard’s save percentage was third best in the country, fractionally off second and first.

“Sam has had an outstanding season for our team,” said REDS’ head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He is extremely dedicated to his craft and getting better on an incremental basis. This consistent preparation on the ice has played a key role for our team to achieve our regular season goals. In the classroom, he’s achieved honours in his first year Engineering classes.”

Richard’s performance helped the REDS finish first in the AUS with a record of 24-4-1-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL).

Richard was also named an AUS 1st Team All-Star and a member of the conference’s All-Rookie Team, along with teammates Simon Pinard and Cody Morgan.

Pinard and fellow REDS’ forward Jason Willms, and defenceman Ross MacDougall and Adam McCormick, were named AUS 2nd Team All-Stars.
