(FREDERICTON, NB) The Atlantic University Sport champion UNB REDS have drawn the No. 3 seed in the 2023 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS University Cup and will face the No. 6 Concordia Stingers, Ontario University Athletics bronze medallists, in the second game of this year’s tournament, on Thursday, March 16th, at 7:00pm.

The game will be played at the Eastlink Centre, in Charlottetown.

“Our team is looking forward to a tremendous opportunity at the national championship tournament,” said REDS head coach Gardiner MacDougall.

The Canada West champions, the Calgary Dinos are the tournament’s No. 1 seed, while the defending University Cup champions and champions of the OUA, the UQTR Patriotes, are the No. 2 seed.

Windsor and Alberta are fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, while the Saint Mary’s Huskies are seventh and the host UPEI Panthers are No. 8.

“The eight-team field is very strong and parity packed,” said Coach MacDougall.

This will be UNB’s 21st appearance in the national championship tournament.

UNB has won eight University Cups, the last coming in 2019, in Lethbridge, Alberta.

UNB and Concordia have met only once in previous University Cup play, in 2018, at UNB’s Aitken Centre, where UNB scored an 8-1 victory.

The REDS were 2022-2023 AUS regular season champs with a record 24-6 (24-4-1-1) and won the AUS title with a 5-2 playoff record.

Concordia was second in the OUA East with a 19-7 record and went 4-2 in the playoffs.
