Bennett Gives Reds OT Win
UNB opens exhibition season on winning note
(FREDERICTON, NB) Kris Bennett (Brampton, ON) scored at 3:57 of overtime to give the UNB Reds a 5-4 win over the visiting McGill Redmen, in exhibition play, Friday night.
Bennett's goal came moments after Reds netminder Rylan Parenteau (Saskatoon, SK) made a save on what looked like a sure winner for the Redmen.
The defending Atlantic University Sport champs opened the scoring with a pair of first period goals just 31 seconds apart.
Fifth-year forward Cam Brace (Etobicoke, ON) scored at 12:45 and Alexandre Goulet (Disraeli, QC) made it 2-0 UNB at 13:16.
Keanu Yamamoto (Spokane, WA) cut the UNB lead in half at 7:33 of the second period.
The two teams then traded goals throughout the third period.
Patrick Watling (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) scored to give UNB a 3-1 edge, but McGill's Michael Cramarossa (Markham, ON) replied just eight seconds later.
Tyler Boland (St. John's, NL) restored UNB's two-goal lead at 3:47 of the third, before Nikolas Brouillard (St. Hilaire, QC), with his first of two, made it 4-3 at 7:03.
Brouillard's second, at 16:33, tied the game 4-4, and set the stage for the fast-paced 3-on-3 overtime.
Bennett and Watling each had two assists, for three-point nights.
Brouillard had a three-point night too, drawing an assist on Yamamoto's goal.
UNB outshot McGill 30-29.
While Parenteau stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced, Louis-Philippe Guindon (St. Joseph-du-Lac, QC) made 25 saves in the McGill net.
The Reds and Redmen play a second exhibition game, at UNB's Aitken Centre, on Saturday, at 3:00pm Atlantic.
