Alexandre Goulet Joining Varsity Reds
Leaving pro, adds to UNB Hockey offence
(FREDERICTON, NB) The Atlantic University Sport leading UNB Varsity Reds are adding more offence as they prepare for the second half of their season, and the 2018 Cavendish Farms University Cup, which the Varsity Reds host in March.
Forward Alexandre Goulet(Disraeli, QC) is joining the Varsity Reds, after spending four seasons in the QMJHL.
Goulet began this season attending training camps with the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and their AHL affiliate in Laval, before settling in with the expansion Jacksonville Icemen, of the East Coast Hockey League. In 18 games, Goulet was the team’s leading scorer with nine goals and 13 assists.
“I knew that if I was going to play in university, it would be at UNB,” said Goulet. “They have the best program, both hockey and school, in Canada. I also know they’re hosting the national championship, and I’m really excited about it.”
Goulet was a consistent scorer in the major junior ranks.
In 2016-17, he led the Victoriaville Tigres, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, scoring 39 goals and 50 assists in just 68 games, good for sixth in the league.
His 16 power-play goals last season were among the league’s top three.
Goulet also played three games with the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans at the end of last season.
Goulet began his major junior career with the Charlottetown Islanders, where he was a first-round draft pick. In his rookie season(2013-14), he recorded 48 points and was named to the QMJHL’s All-Rookie Team.
In two-and-a-half seasons with the Islanders, he scored 72 goals and 56 assists in 160 games before being traded to Victoriaville during the 2015-16 season. In 34 games with the Tigres that season, he added 22 goals and 19 assists in 34 games.
“Alex is a top-notch player who continually improved his performance throughout his Quebec League career,” said Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He has a passion for creating and supplying offence, and should be a valuable addition for our team.”
MacDougall had hoped to have Goulet in the fold before now, but is happy the former pro has decided to come to Fredericton.
“He’d made a commitment to our team in the summer, along with his former Victoriaville captain Tristan Pomerleau, and now, after his pro apprenticeship, he’s able to rejoin Tristan with UNB for an exciting second half.”
“Tristan’s one of my best buddies,” said Goulet. “We came down together to visit the school, and I think we’re both really excited to play with each other again.”
The Varsity Reds expect to have Goulet in their line-up when they host the Ryerson Rams in the Peterbilt Atlantic Pete Kelly Cup, December 29th and 30th, at the Aitken Centre.
