UNB's national champs get their rings
(FREDERICTON, NB) The wait is over for the 2017 Cavendish Farms University Cup champions.
Members of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey team received their 2017 national championship rings in a ceremony, Tuesday evening, at Kingswood Lodge.
Team President and Kingswood owner Brian Johnston played host to the event and head coach Gardiner MacDougall oversaw the presentation of the rings.
Among those receiving rings, Athletic Therapist Joe Glenn, who has been part of all seven of UNB’s Canadian championship winning teams. (1998, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2017)
The 2017 ring features the UNB Hockey logo and two silhouettes of the University Cup, marking UNB’s first back-to-back national titles.
The Varsity Reds played host to the 2017 Cavendish Farms University Cup tournament.
They beat Queen’s 5-1 in the quarter-finals, Acadia 3-0 in the semi-finals and Saskatchewan 5-3 in the championship game.
Cam Braes(Shawnigan Lake, BC) scored four goals to lead UNB in the title game.
Braes could not attend Tuesday’s ring ceremony. He’s one of seven members of the Varsity Reds’ championship team currently playing professional hockey.
UNB will host the 2018 Cavendish Farms University Cup, March 15-18, at the Aitken University Centre.
