SMU Edges V-Reds In Shootout

(HALIFAX, NS) It took three periods, overtime, and ten rounds of a shootout, but the Saint Mary's Huskies beat the UNB Varsity Reds 5-4 on Friday evening.

Bronson Beaton(Springhill, NS) scored the shootout winner for the Huskies.

Dylan DiPerna(Nobleton, ON) scored twice in regulation to lead Saint Mary's, while Hunter Garlent(Thorold, ON) and Brad Latour(Barrie, ON) added singles.

Randy Gazzola(Thorold, ON), Chris Clapperton(Cap d'Espoir, QC), Kris Bennett(Brampton, ON), and Colin Suellentrop(Plantation, FLA) scored in regulation for the Varsity Reds, while Tyler Boland(St. John's, NL) had two assists.

The Huskies opened the scoring, on Garlent's goal 6:59 into the first, but Gazzola tied it 1-1 exactly five minutes later.

Saint Mary's added a pair of late goals to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Clapperton and Bennett scored to even the contest in the second, a period that saw UNB outshoot the Huskies 12-3.

DiPerna's second of the game came early in the third, and short-handed, to give SMU a 4-3 lead.

Suellentrop's first goal of the season, also short-handed, pulled UNB even, forcing overtime and, eventually, the shootout.

Eric Brassard(St. Hubert, QC) was named the Subway Player of the Game. He stopped 35 of the 39 shots he faced in regulation and overtime and 8 of 10 in the shootout.

Alex Dubeau(Mascouche, QC) stopped 21 of the 25 shots he faced in regulation and overtime.

With the win, the Huskies are now 12-4-1, good for third place in Atlantic University Sport.

Despite the loss, the Varsity Reds remain unbeaten in regulation this season. They're 14-0-3 and continue to lead the AUS standings.

The Huskies host UPEI on Saturday while UNB visits Acadia. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
