(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds scored early and often in a 5-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies Saturday, at UNB's Aitken Centre.

Mike Thomas(New Maryland, NB), Oliver Cooper(Fredericton, NB), Kris Bennett(Brampton, ON), Mark Simpson(Rothesay, NB) and Dylan Willick(Prince George, BC) scored for UNB.

Tristan Pomerleau(Riviere-du-Loup, QC) had three assists and was named Subway Player of the Game, while Colin Suellentrop(Plantation, FLA) had two assists.

"It felt great," said Pomerleau, of his first points as a Varsity Red. "Me and Suellentop, we're starting to have great chemistry together and it was going well and the points are coming. I'm happy with that."

Calder Brooks(Emerald Park, SK) scored the Huskies' lone goal, an unassisted marker, midway through the third period.

"We just got outworked," said Huskies head coach Trevor Stienburg. "We just didn't play well."

The Varsity Reds outshot the Huskies 34-19.

UNB was 1-for-6 with the man advantage, Bennett's goal coming on the power-play. The Huskies were 0-for-2 on the power-play.

"That wasn't the way our team has been playing, but at the same time, they play a fast game. We either need to have a lot more games with them to get used to it or play better when we do," said Stienburg.

Saint Mary's looked to be building momentum with back to back early second period power-plays, but UNB held.

Kris Bennett feels that was a turning point.

"Anytime you kill off penalties against a team like Saint Mary's it's huge for momentum," he said. "We killed those off and just kept pushing."

Eric Brassard(St. Hubert, QC) started in goal for the Huskies, but was pulled after 40 minutes.

He gave up four goals on 25 shots.

Cole Cheveldave(Calgary, AB) took over in the third period, making eight saves on nine shots.

Alex Dubeau earned his fifth win in six starts, making 18 saves.

The Huskies visit St FX on Wednesday.

The Varsity Reds host Moncton, next Friday. Game time is 7:00pm.
