UNB bids to host CIS hockey championship
UNB and Toronto are vying to host the University Cup in 2017 and 2018.
(OTTAWA, ONT.) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Tuesday the reception of 14 bid proposals to host national championship events over the next two academic years.
This latest round of bidding was for women’s rugby in 2016 and 2017, as well as women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s hockey and men’s hockey in 2017 and 2018.
The CIS championship selection committee will meet over the next few weeks to review the bids, and all hosts will be announced by mid-October.
Women’s basketball proved the most popular of the five disciplines up for bid with five schools expressing interest for one or both years, including Alberta, Queen’s, Regina, Ryerson and Victoria.
Proposals for men’s basketball were received from 2015 host Ryerson, as well as groups in Ottawa (Carleton, Ottawa, Ottawa Senators) and Halifax (Acadia, Dalhousie, Sports & Entertainment Atlantic).
In hockey, Queen’s, UPEI and Western are in the running on the women’s side, while UNB and Toronto are vying to host the men’s University Cup tournament.
In women’s rugby, Victoria was the only university to bid for the rights to the 2016 competition. No proposals were received for 2017.
