Former UNB video coach to join Maple Leafs

Former UNB Hockey video coach Andrew Brewer will join the Toronto Maple Leafs as an assistant coach on Mike Babcock's staff, the Leafs announced yesterday.

Also joining Brewer as assistant coaches on Babcock's staff are Jim Hiller and D.J. Smith. Matthew J. Herring was hired by the Leafs as head strength and conditioning coach. 

“I’m excited to have them join the organization," said head coach Mike Babcock in a release from the team. "We have a lot of work ahead of us but are all thrilled to be part of the Maple Leafs. We’re grateful for the cooperation afforded to us by the Detroit Red Wings, Oshawa Generals and San Antonio Spurs.”

Brewer spent last season as an assistant coach with Babcock at the Detroit Red Wings. He was the video coach for the Varsity Reds for three seasons (2008-2011) and was a part of the University Cup-winning teams in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.

After his time with the V-Reds, Brewer spent three years as a video coach with Hockey Canada, and was a part of Canada's gold-medal team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2012, 2013 and 2014 IIHF World Championships. 

"We're tremendously proud to see Andrew succeed at the NHL level," said Varsity Reds Director of Athletics John Richard. "We look forward to seeing him continue to thrive in this new role."
