UNB Blanks Top-Ranked Axemen

(WOLFVILLE, NS) A five minute span early in the second period helped the CIS No. 4-ranked UNB Varsity Reds to a dominating 4-0 win over the top-ranked Acadia Axemen, in Wolfville, Saturday night.

The four unanswered goals by the VReds handed the Axemen their second straight loss.

UNB, on the other hand, extended their conference winning streak to seven games.

Francis Beauvillier scored the first UNB goal at 1:07 of the second period, one-timing a feed from Jordan Murray.

Eighteen seconds later, Phillipe Maillet gave the Varsity Reds a 2-0 lead.

Three minutes after that, Dylan Willick silenced the home crowd on a feed from Randy Gazzola. The goal chased Brandon Glover from the Acadia net.

UNB sealed the win with less than five minutes remaining in the second. Taylor MacDougall scored shorthanded, off a rebound created by teammate Alex Wall's end to end skate and high shot.

The Reds outshot Acadia 40-30 and rookie goaltender Etienne Marcoux was good on all 30 shots, earning third star honours. Gazzola was the game's first star, with two assists, while Acadia's Kyle Farrell was second star.

The Axemen find themselves tied with UNB atop the tight AUS standings, with 34 points. UNB has one game in hand.

UNB is off until Wednesday, when they host the St. Thomas Tommies, in the annual Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game. Face-off is at 7:00PM, at the Aitken University Centre. The game will also recognize Bell Let's Talk Day, aimed at raising awareness and removing the stigmas of mental health issues.
