Varsity Reds top Tommies 6-1 in latest crosstown match-up

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds bested the St. Thomas University Tommies 6-1 in AUS men's hockey action Wednesday night in front of 941 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

The Varsity Reds were led by Dana Fraser and Rob Mignardi, who both tallied two points in the win. UNB goaltender David Shantz made 25 saves en route to his 13th win of the season.

Colin Martin was the lone goal scorer for the Tommies.

Fraser opened the scoring at 15:11 to put the Varsity Reds up 1-0, but Colin Martin responded for the Tommies on the next play to tie the game.

With less than two minutes to go in the frame, Mignardi slid a rebound past Tommies netminder Phillippe Trudeau and reclaimed the lead for the Varsity Reds.

The second was scoreless until 16:04 when Cam Critchlow profited from a scramble in front of Trudeau to put the Varsity Reds up 3-1 after 20 minutes.

UNB's momentum continued into the third with Peter Trainor scoring off a wrister from the slot 2:40 into the frame. Fraser notched his second of the night—a shorthanded breakaway goal— at 12:24, and Cameron Brace added an insurance marker at 15:47 to give UNB their third "Battle of the Hill" win this year.

The Tommies are back in action Friday when they travel to Wolfville to face the Acadia Axemen. The Varsity Reds will host the St. Francis Xavier X-Men Friday night at the Aitken University Centre.
