UNB downs Moncton 2-1

UNB bested Université de Moncton 2-1 in what was a bit of a rough and tumble game in men's hockey pre-season action.

The Varsity Reds came into the match-up off a big win last weekend, beating the OUA's Nipissing Lakers 11-1 on home ice. The Aigles Bleus also had a win this week, defeating Acadia 3-2 on Wednesday.

UNB started strong tonight, scoring their first goal at 6:39. Tyler Carroll had the power play goal with the assist from Randy Gazzola and Jordan Murray.

Goal number two for the Varsity Reds came around the fourth minute of the second period. Cam Braes had the goal this time, again on a power play. Assists went to Peter Trainor and Matt Petgrave.

Moncton also got on the board in the second. Jean-François Plante scored with seven minutes remaining in the period, assisted by Danny Chaisson and Luc Williams.

The third period saw UNB bring a fresh goalie into the action. Newcomer Chris Carrozzi, who was the OHL Goalie of the Year in 2009-2010, took over for David Shantz. Shantz is also starting his first year as a Varisty Red. The former second-round pick (37th overall) for the Florida Panthers is coming to UNB after taking few years off from hockey.

This game also saw defenceman Colin Suellentrop's debut appearance in a V-Reds jersey after returning from the Arizona Coyotes training camp. Rob Mignardi was benched with a one-game suspension following his major penalty in last weekend's game versus Nipissing.

The Varsity Reds travel next to play Boston College on Saturday, October 4, and Maine on Sunday, October 5.

UNB head coach Gardiner MacDougall says playing these American teams is a real growth opportunity for the V-Reds.

"This is always an exciting challenge for our team," he said. "We're playing two top notch Hockey East schools. It's a good indicator of our progress for the early part of the season."

The Varsity Reds have their next home game on October 17 at 7pm when they host Dalhousie.

The Aigles Bleus play next on October 4 at 7pm when they host SMU.
