Varsity Reds close out first half to finish 2nd in AUS with 23 points

The UNB Varsity Reds were on the road this past weekend for a pair of games in Nova Scotia against Dal and Acadia. 

Friday night the Varsity Reds shut out the Dalhousie Tigers with a 3-0 win and Saturday night they lost to the Acadia Axemen 5-1.

On Friday night, in Halifax, Cam Braes scored a power-play goal in the first period against the Tigers. Nick MacNeil and Thomas Nesbitt had the assists.

At 4:07 of the third the same three scored UNB's second of the game. Nick MacNeil had the goal while Cam Braes and Thomas Nesbitt had the assists.

UNB's final goal came just four minutes later as Phillippe Maillet put one by Vye.  Assists were credited to Jordan Murray and Cam Critchlow.

UNB's Charles Lavigne made 23 saves for the shutout while Dal's Wendell Vye turned away 36 shots for the Tigers.

On Saturday night in Wolfville, Acadia opened up the scoring at 13:10 of the first period and went on to score an additional 4 goals in their 5-1 win over UNB.

UNB's lone goal was credited to Tyler Carroll on a power play at 3:10 of the second period - Marc-Antoine Desnoyers and Phillippe Maillet were credited with assists on the goal.

Lavigne was in net for the second night turning away 38 shots while Acadia's Evan Mosher had 27 saves.

At this point in the season senior Chris Culligan and first year Philippe Maillet lead the team in points with 15.

League play in AUS men's hockey has come to a close for the Christmas break.  UNB will resume play as they take on the St Thomas Tommies in exhibition play at the Aitken Centre on December 29th – game time is 7:00 pm.
