Varsity Reds win two on the road

This weekend the defending CIS Champions, UNB Varsity Reds, travelled to Nova Scotia to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies and the St.FX X-Men for the second time in as many weeks.

On Friday night the V-Reds defeated the Huskies 4-2 and on Saturday took on the X-Men with the same 4-2 result.

Friday saw the hot Chris Culligan put the V-Reds on the board just 39 seconds into the game with help from Cam Critchlow and Phillipe Maillet. 

Cam Braes scored a minute and half later on the power play as SMU's Parker Deighan was given two minutes for hooking.  Assists on the goal were credited to Cam MacLise and Nick MacNeil.

For the Varsity Reds the game winning goal came at 12:58 in the first and they took advantage of another power play as Huskies Stephen Johnston SMU took two minutes for holding.  Cam Critchlow was credited with the goal and was assisted by Matt Petgrave and Maillet.

The only goal of the second came as Huskie Steven Beyers put one past UNB's Charlie Lavigne at the 12:58 mark.

In the third the Huskies came to within one as Strickland scored at 6:53.

UNB was quick to answer as Mike Thomas scored at 9:37 bringing the score to 4-2 V-Reds.

Lavigne faced a total of 30 shots while Curtis Black had 35.

On Saturday the Varsity Reds were in action at the Keating Centre in Antigonish where they downed the X-Men 4-2.

StFX opened up the scoring at 5:12 in the first as Jason Bast put one past Charlie Lavinge.  Who got the nod both games on the weekend tilts.

Bast's goal stood until Mike Thomas, assisted by Thomas Nesbitt and Taylor MacDougall scored on a power play opportunity at the 2:02 of the second.

X broke the tie as Robert Slaney kicked off the third period scoring fest as he managed to get by Lavigne at the 4:34 mark.

It was all V-Reds after that.

Nick MacNeil tied it up 2-2 with a rebound off a Shea Kewin shot, Matt Petgrave was the other assist.

Cam Critchlow scored the game winner beating X-Men goalie Drew Oswley. Newcomer Phillipe Maillet was credited with the assist.

MacNeil, with his second, wrapped up the scoring at 19:52 on an unassisted empty-netter.

Charles Lavigne made 18 saves for the 4-2 win, while Drew Owsley turned aside 40 shots for the X-Men.

Lavigne has 4 wins to his credit, a goals against average of 2.25 and .898 saves percentage.

Chris Culligan how has 4 goals to his credit, with 2 assists for a total of 6 points. He is currently tied for third place in the AUS total points.

Next up the Varsity Reds are at STU on November 1st nd then home to UdeM on November 2nd.  Game times are both 7:00 pm.
