Varsity Reds announces additional forwards
The UNB Varsity Reds would like to announce the addition of two forwards to their program - Shea Kewin (Guelph, Ontario) who will join the program immediately and Rob Mignardi (Richmond Hill, Ontario) who will red-shirt this year and join the Varsity Reds for the 2014-2015 season.
Kewin is a 6'2, 210 lb power forward who has played the past four years with the Dalhousie Tigers when his career best season was 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points in 28 games played. Prior to that he had played with the QMJHL Saint John Sea Dogs (GP 29 12-8-20 pts) and the OHL Oshawa Generals (GP 97 21-21-42-184) and Ottawa 67's (96 15-5-20-133) He is a former teammate of V-Reds Tim Priamo and Mike Thomas. He will join UNB's MBA entrepreneurship program.
"Shea will be a welcome addition to our program, and will certainly bring size, speed, physicality and plenty of spirit. He was always a respected and hard to play against opponent," commented coach MacDougall.
Rob Mignardi has played AHL pro hockey for the past two years (Manchester/Houston) and finished last year with the Orlando Solar Bears (53 11-12-23-63) in the ECHL. He was a four year OHL veteran who had a break-out 20 year-old season and helped lead the Owen Sound Attack to the OHL championship and a berth is the Memorial Cup. As their captain, Mignardi had 15 goals and 9 assists for 24 points in the 22 games he played in the OHL playoff and was named OHL play-off MVP. In four years in the OHL with Kingston and Owen Sound he has a 99-138-237 251 record in 256 games played including two consecutive 30 goal seasons. He will study Kinesiology at UNB and rejoin former teammate Matt Petgrave.
"Rob is a huge addition to our team; he plays the game the right way and will have an immediate positive impact with his relentless work ethic and two-way play," commented MacDougall.
Mignardi will play the 2013-2014 season with the Newfoundland Senior League.
The Varsity Reds are off to Denver, Colorado where they will play three games against top quality NCAA opponents, including Colorado College, University of Denver and Air Force Academy. UNB will open the 2013-14 season on Friday, October 18 with the CIS banner raising vs the StFX Xmen.
