The UPEI fans had tons to cheer about in the first minute when Jordan Mayer with a burst of speed beat the UNB defense and on a hard angle scored and scored on Daniel LaCosta to take the 1-0 lead. The Panthers were aggressive for the next ten minutes with tons of chances but unable to add to the lead. At the 12 minute mark, UNB tied the game with a goal from Nick MacNeil off a great pass from Islander Colby Pridham. The period ended tied 1-1. The Panthers outshot the Varsity Reds 15-8.
The second period started with some great chances by both teams, but UNB capitalized three times, 9:58 Cam Crithlow, 14:41 Thomas Nesbitt and 18:25 on the power play Marc A Desonyers taking a 4-1 lead to the locker room. The Panthers best chance came at the 15 minute mark when the Panthers had an open net shot, Jordan Knox was unable to score as LaCosta was caught on the boards. The shots on net were in favour of UNB 14-5.
The third period was a furry of penalties for the Panthers, with Mike McIsaac in the box with only 1:25 gone in the period and he picked up a10 minute misconduct - followed by UPEI”s Mason Wilgosh for roughing, Reggie Traccitto for slashing, Tyler Brown for roughing. UNB’s Marc A Desnoyers picked up a 0 minute misconduct along with UPEI’s Chris Desousa 10 minute misconduct and a game misconduct. The only goal of the period was scored by Ben Wright on a shot from the point that found the top shelf. The Varsity Reds go on to the Subway AUS Men’s Hockey with a 5-1 win and will now face the Saint Mary Huskies.
